Panthers release Joey Slye; Ryan Santoso to be kicker

The Carolina Panthers released kicker Joey Slye on Saturday, two days after trading for Ryan Santoso.Slye, 25, made 54 of 68 field goals over two seasons as Carolina’s kicker, but struggled this preseason. He missed a 49-yard field goal in Friday night’s 34-9 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.”He’s a wonderful person, and he’s worked really hard,” Panthers coach Matt Rhule said of Slye after Friday’s game. “He’s made a lot of kicks and he’s done a lot of good things, and he’s just in one of those places right now where he’s struggling.”When you struggle at a lot of other positions, people don’t know it, but when you struggle at that position, unfortunately it’s magnified.”Santoso, acquired from the New York Giants, made both field-goal attempts and three extra points during Friday’s game. Slye made an extra point in addition to the missed field goal.
