James Gadson, the veteran drummer whose playing shaped some of the most recognizable soul, funk, and disco records of the past several decades, has died at 86. His wife, Barbara, confirmed his death and said he had recently undergone surgery and suffered a serious fall. Gadson became known as one of the most trusted session musicians in popular music, building a career that crossed generations and styles.
Born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1939, Gadson started in school music programs, served in the Air Force, and later moved into professional recording work after relocating to Los Angeles. His drumming appeared on songs including Lean on Me, Use Me, Dancing Machine, I Will Survive, and Don’t Leave Me This Way. Later in his career, he also played on releases by Beck, Justin Timberlake, D’Angelo, and Harry Styles. Musicians and fans remembered him as a drummer with deep groove, control, and a lasting impact on modern rhythm sections.
